CDMI makes big strides with another successful symposium
September 28-29th, 2017
The National Science Foundation’s Center for Disruptive Musculoskeletal Innovations (CDMI) held its fourth annual fall symposium at the UCSF Mission Bay campus on September 28-29, 2017. During the event, CDMI
Director (Jeffrey C. Lotz, PhD) presented a summary of the Center's 2016-17 accomplishments and the Center Industry Advisor Board (IAB)selected the 2017-18 project grant awardees. The finalists went through a six-month selection process beginning with 115 project ideas that were narrowed down to the final 21 through multiple IAB deliberations. Selected projects covered a range of topics, including wearable sensors to track surgical outcomes, implant surface modifications to prevent infection, implant biomechanics, and systems for high-throughput drug screening for
including industry members, FDA representatives, researchers, clinicians, and students from UC San Francisco, University of Toledo, Northeastern University, The Ohio State University, Technologico de Monterrey (Mexico), and Ulm University (Germany).
This year, the CDMI welcomed new affiliate sites at Northeastern University and The Ohio State University. “We are delighted to have two new affiliate sites join the CDMI and are looking forward to adding more sites and recruit even more industry partners during our renewal year, “ noted Dr. Lotz. “We are ready to take the CDMI to the next level via strategic growth that provides valued benefits for our industry partners.”
This year's guest speakers were CDMI/CERSI Engineering Intern Thomas Graf, who presented his findings from his summer internship at the FDA on a spinal implant computational model roadmap; and FDA Director Dr. Anton Dmitriev, who gave a preview of the upcoming Smart Sensor Public Workshop that will be held at FDA and co-sponsored by the CDMI. For the upcoming fifth year, the CDMI will hold its Spring Symposium at the University of Toledo.

Center celebrates third anniversary and builds membership base
April 5-6th, 2017
Beginning its fourth year, the Center for Disruptive Musculoskeletal Innovations (CDMI) held its Spring Symposium at the University of Toledo. With growing interest of expanding the CDMI to more universities, representatives from Allegheny Singer Research Institute, The Ohio State University, Northeastern University and Wright University also participated. This year's keynote speaker was NSF's Program Director of the Biomedical Engineering Program, Dr. Michele J. Grimm, who gave an insightful talk on navigating BME-related funding programs.
The 2016-17 CDMI grant awardees at the symposium presented their mid-year project updates to the Center’s Industry Advisor Board (IAB) members. All Center members voted on the 2017-18 Research Roadmap that will be used to attract the new 2017-18 cycle proposals. In the last two years, the IAB has reviewed over 80 proposals and have been enthusiastic of the projects' diversity. This year's
On April 5, 2017, the Center for Disruptive Musculoskeletal Innovations gathered for its semi-annual spring symposium at the University of Toledo in Toledo, Ohio. Over 100 researchers and industry representatives from UCSF, University of Toledo, Allegheny Singer Research Institute, The Ohio State University, and Wright University attended the two-day meeting. finalists will be selected during
the CDMI 2017 Fall Symposium at UCSF in September. All participants are encouraged to provide feedback about their experience to help shape the September’s Fall Symposium.
“The CDMI Symposium afforded a great opportunity for both graduate and undergraduate students to not only present their research in a professional setting, but also to further their research through the feedback and insights given by experts in industry, faculty, and the eminent scholar guests,” said CDMI Co-Director Vijay Goel, PhD.
An exciting addition during this past year was the recruitment of technology scouts that gave overviews of the cutting-edge technologies and studies in digital health (Britta Berg-Johansen, PhD Candidate, UC San Francisco) and biomaterials (Stephen Jaffee, Research Intern, Allegheny General Hospital). Matt Callahan (Analytics Program Manager at UCSF Department of Orthopaedic Surgery) also shared information on national, State, and UCSF patient databases that UCSF PIs have accessed for cost and clinical outcomes research. These reports were intended to be informational and to trigger PIs and the CDMI Industry Advisory Board (IAB) to stimulate potential CDMI projects.
Center's fiscal growth continues
"CDMI support was key for our early-stage project. Besides fostering interdisciplinary collaboration between labs, it provided us with opportunities for industry feedback and IP-related legal guidance. Simply put, the IUCRC-CDMI model allowed us to rapidly turn a new idea into data that support proof-of-concept for a novel back pain treatment,” said project PI Aaron Fields, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, UCSF.
In addition, the CDMI has sustained its
The CDMI continues to gain momentum. At the close of its third year, it has leveraged the $40,000 per industry member fee by nearly $2,400,000 in cash support and more than $500,000 in capital and in-kind contributions. The CDMI also continues to expand its collaborations. “We are pleased to have Dr. Sean Tunis, Founder and CEO of the Center for Medical Technology Policy, join the CDMI as Reimbursement Liaison,” notes Jeffrey Lotz, PhD, CDMI Center Director.
“With his help, the CDMI is working towards developing projects with clinical cost analysis in mind by attracting payors to join the Center.”
More than 30 abstracts and manuscripts have been submitted by the CDMI awardees and may be found online. A second team of CDMI collaborators have filed a patent for the “Enhancing Disc Endplate Permeability” project which was started as a collaboration between UCSF researchers Aaron Fields, PhD; Francis Szoka, PhD; and Jeffrey Lotz, PhD.
collaboration with the FDA as it is gearing up to work on a new project to gather biomechanical testing requirements for intervertebral implants, as well as determine a roadmap for replacing these tests with computational models.
CDMI Fall Symposium -- A Success!
September 29th-30th, 2016
The National Science Foundation’s Center for Disruptive Musculoskeletal Innovations (CDMI) held its third annual fall symposium at the UCSF Mission Bay campus during September 29-30, 2016. The event, which was attended by researchers, clinicians and industry members, presented the center’s summary of its second year’s accomplishments as well as selecting the 2016-2017 project grant awardees. More than 75 center members attended, in addition to being broadcast via webcast to remote CDMI members.
“We were thrilled by the turnout,“ noted Jeffrey C. Lotz, PhD, CDMI Director. “We were able to review over 20 proposals on highly-innovative subjects that will change the way we provide solutions to musculoskeletal problems in the future.”
During the 2016 Fall CDMI Symposium, attendees listened to individual project proposals and the CDMI Industry Advisory Board voted on which would be funded; 12 proposals received up to $40,000 one-year grants.
Dr. Stefano Bini, MD, was one of 21 presenters, who identified a research project that focused on the center’s mission of addressing unmet market needs in musculoskeletal research. Dr. Bini’s project focuses on digital health, and was one of eight recipients of a CDMI grant. (Photo: UCSF)
The Center for Disruptive Musculoskeletal Innovations (CDMI) – a collaboration funded by the National Science Foundation between researchers at the University of California, San Francisco and the University of Toledo – completed its first year with great success.
“The CDMI has gained great momentum since its launch in 2014.” Jeffrey Lotz, PhD, the Center’s Director, said. “At the close of our first year, we have been able to leverage the $40,000 per industry member fee by almost $2,400,000 in cash support and more than $500,000 in capital and in-kind contributions. We are proud of these accomplishments and especially the partnership that we have been able to form with our Industry Board Members and other entities like the FDA. We are looking forward to an even brighter third year.”
So far more than 15 abstracts have been submitted by the CDMI awardees, many of which are under publication. In addition, a team of CDMI collaborators have filed a patent that came out of a project entitled Quantitative Tool Using Impedance Spectroscopy to Monitor Fracture Healing. The project started as a joint collaboration between a UCSF clinician (Meir Marmor, MD) and research faculty members from UCSF (Chelsea Bahney, PhDand Safa Herfat, PhD) and UC Berkeley (Michel Maharbiz, PhD).
“This has been a very exciting project to work on and is a great example of the power of cross-disciplinary team science. The project stemmed from a clinical need for better ways to detect progression of fracture healing. By establishing a collaboration between Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at UC Berkeley, and a team of clinicians, bioengineers, and translational science faculty in the UCSF Orthopaedic Trauma Institute, we have coalesced the expertise necessary to develop and test a novel impedance spectroscopy device,” said Dr. Bahney, UCSF Assistant Adjunct Professor and a lead researcher on the project.
“This project has been driven by a very talented and motivated PhD candidate, Monica Lin. The award has provided her with the unique benefit of having industry advisors in addition to traditional academic advisors. CDMI is ideally positioned to help catalyze translation of new musculoskeletal technologies. We are very thankful for the seed-funding that has given our team the opportunity to explore an otherwise unfunded project that has significant potential for clinical impact,” Dr. Bahney added.
Center Unveils Several Successes in First Year
Science Spotlight
We are pleased to announce that this spring Dr. Anton Dmitriev (left) officially became a US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Liaison to the CDMI. In such capacity, Dr. Dmitriev will present and receive information and views on behalf of the FDA. This was made possible, in part, by the FDA’s involvement in the UCSF-Stanford Center of Excellence in Regulatory Science and Innovation (CERSI) – a collaboration amongst scientists at UC San Francisco, Stanford University, and the FDA to support collaborative projects in regulatory science. Via an FDA-funded proposal thru CERSI, the CDMI has sent a UCSF medical student (David Sing, right) on a 6-month in-residence internship at the FDA, where he is collaborating with FDA staff to analyze 510k submission data for his study “Mechanical Testing Performance in Cervical Interbody Fusion Devices.” We are looking forward to his presentation update during the Fall 2015 CDMI Symposium.
